22 year old Kayvew’s passionate debut single is designed to inspire against the odds. With intelligent lyrics, set against the backdrop of racism, violence and crime, the young rapper calls out to young people to take a stand and “Wake up, Be About Knowledge” Birmingham based Kayvew marks his entry into the British Asian music scene with a hard-hitting track and video that acknowledges the struggles, political and racial tensions that exist, but with a fresh approach that encourages people to tackle the issues with their minds rather than their fists. You may not have heard the name, but this young man’s musical heritage goes a long way. The son of reggae star Apache Indian, Kayvew grew up with music pulsing through his veins and is no stranger to the industry. His very first live performance was an impromptu sing-along with Apache at the tender age of 9, in front of 60,000 fans at Japan’s reggae Sunsplash. But Kayvew has set his stall out differently from his father. He says: “We’ve grown up in different times, and the challenges that I’ve faced in Britain are worlds apart from my parents’ generation. My music is a reflection of my experiences, no-one else’s. I took the knocks, learnt from them, so now I can write about them from my heart and mind.” This inspiring track shows the depth of Kayvew’s understanding, commitment and experience. With lyrics like “... tryna find meaning inside this mess, they make it hard to walk righteous steps, fool us into thinking that life is less, and everyday we're desensitized to death...” Kayvew wants young people to question what’s going on around them, and to show them that their mind is the most powerful tool. He adds: “It would have been much easier to create a track in a typical ‘hip hop style’ with the knives, the guns and the girls, because that’s how everyone sees young Black and Asian people. I want to play a role in changing that perception – we have minds, we have voices and we need to be heard.” To get a flavour of the T.R.U.T.H.
