Mitch Hyare is a British Indian percussionist, producer and sound engineer residing in California. Master at playing the Dhol, a traditional Indian drum based out of the northern state of Punjab, Mitch is recognized world wide as the 2001 World Dhol Champion. His self developed skills and variations of blending unique Eastern style patterns with Western has made him a world icon and pioneer in the way the Dhol is played today.
Mitch was originally introduced to traditional Bhangra music in the UK. He was exposed to new genres while growing up in California. His passion for Bhangra music led him to experiment with different instruments at an early age where he showed significant promise as a traditional drummer as well as an Indian percussionist. He further perfected his skills by being taught by the legendary Dhol Master, Lal Singh Bhatti. While still attending high school, he was performing at local clubs, shows and charity events. His talent was recognized by various artists especially RDB who collaborated with Mitch to make him a household name.
Mitch is a prolific artist, willing to lend a hand and drum, to a range of artists and producers from Morgan Heritage to E40. In the studio with Dj Quik and E40, Mitch was the first artist to introduce Dhol to the major Rap and Hip Hop industry. His capabilities of developing new styles of play have given him recognition amongst artists and producers from all different genres such as Turf Talk, Peter Maffay and Jack Douglas. This recognition has led to headlining performances at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival alongside acclaimed producer Cheb I Sabbah as well as opening the genre of rock in Germany to the sounds of traditional Indian Dhol on the 2007 Begegnungen Tour. Mitch has also taken his talent into the Latin, Reggae and Afghan markets; fusing his style of Bhangra music into these genres while still remaining a strong force in the Indian community. He is the first Indian percussionist featured in the international Hip-Hop magazine publication, Vibe. He has also been featured on major Asian broadcasts ranging from the Bollywood Movie Awards and Zee TV specials to local American programming.
Mitch has developed a name for himself all over the world collaborating as a Indian percussionist playing Dhol, Dholki, Tabla, Tumbi, Algozey and Chimta on various albums and stage performances.
As an icon to the younger generation, Mitch gives back to the community by giving lessons in his crafts. His international appeal and fan base has allowed him to turn his passion into a business oppurtunity by creating customized dhol drums for his fans around the world.
