Questions about you and bhangra... 2 Years, 10 Months ago

Hya guys.
I have following bhangra pretty closely for alot of my life. Until about 5/6 months ago.
I always used to get cussed about listening to bhangra. That it was repetitive, the mc's weren't talented (infact they were retarded etc), so on and so forth.
Now though I see where they are coming from. This is of course personal opinion. However I feel the bhangra industry has become the least innovative industry.
Effectively most of the songs have been about alcohol, girls, clubs, dancing, jatts or jatts drinking alcohol in the club and dancing with a girl. You get the point.
I'm not here to slate you. I want to know your opinions on the matter.

I have to agree. I mean the last great album was PMCs Indian Timing and before that Tigerstyles. 2008 was such a great year we were spoit with all the big names releasing. 2009 feels like a 'gap' year all the big names have released in the last year or two and are working on new material.
2009 has not seen any great albums or even good songs, I'm slowly getting out of bhangra

PMC is one of those artists where you have to have a listen to what they've released.
However Indian Timing was a massive disappointment for me. There is nothing on my mp3 player from that album. Hell there's not anything from Steel Bangle either.
2008 was a so-so year. Angrez Ali's Phattey Chak and Aman Hayer's Je Naal Nachungi, probably the only songs that got my attention.
I hardly catch anything new from the Asian Network or something either. Everytime I switch on it's Miss Pooja. After maybe a year of her being on the scene I still don't understand the fuss. But she's on alot of albums already, she'll probably make her money and vanish.
Right now I take no pleasure in listening to bhangra. It's a shame when it's meant to be a big part of our culture.

I agree with it too. These days the music tends to be all about girls/alcohol etc etc and the whoole miss pooja thing is completely true aswell!
I guess the only way to justify the reason for so many similar tracks is due to this being the stereyotypical "panjaban" way of life- which is drinking alcohol..which obviously isnt true in some cases. And dancing with girls and all that rubbish lol. To be fair one of the best tracks of 2009 has to be Jaag De rehna featuring Gurdas Maan- the lyrics actually mean something and have an inner depth instead of the simple- go toa club, find a girl, drink some daru, dance with her, the end. However obviously it was Gurdas maan who made the track and tru skool just remixed it- but hey he did a good job. I reckon we need some more of these sort of tracks in the panjabi industry..its getting boring and has been for the past couple of years...some are successful but some are just awful.
and miss pooja? whats so good about her someone please tell me. personally i think someone like sundesh kumari has wayy better vocals than her and yet sundesh kumari hasnt got the amount of notice that miss pooja has. I mean fair play shes doing well for punjabi women ...and putting herself on the map..but MY GOD. its getting boring now. i found this happened with lehmbre aswell, but then i felt lembre wasnt half as annoying as miss pooja is now. Don't get me wrong, i think miss pooja is ok in moderate, but these days its like every other trackl features her. I guess her best tracks would be char panj/seeti/Ghera deh de and maybe aashiq with PBN, and thats because shes only featuring on the track and so theres some good male vocals to balance her out.

First of all wow@ people who are talking sense.
You know (touch wood I hope he lives a long life) I fear the day we lose Gurdas Mann.
However Gurdas Mann amongst others have shown us there are many other things to sing about.
I agree with your comment on Sudesh Kumari. Miss Pooja, got boring for me at the time when Seeti was getting overplayed.
There was a point like you said that Lehmber was getting abit annoying, but he deserved the limelight because he was a breath of fresh air.
It also comes down to the producers, who somehow get away with repetitive production. PBN is a great example of this. Tru Skool, Specialist are also showing signs of this and Rishi Rich has been for a very long time (flute samples anyone?). Passing the repetition off as a signature sound is no excuse.
After all of this they expect us to pay 10 pound for an album.

The bolded bit is one of the best comments I've read. There is no excuse to replicate sounds and expect people to pay full wack for it.

I would really like to know what the record companies are thinking.
Even more than that I would like to be in the studio where these producers are getting opinions on their tracks and everyone stands around saying YEH YEH ITS A SIK TUNE.
It is truly mind boggling that most these tracks get to see release.

Rana Sahota paid Aman Hayer over £30,000 for album production and for Aman Hayer to appear in the video alongside him and credited on the album as producer.

I wonder if he'll break even. lol.
I don't know anyone who buys bhangra albums.
Maybe singles and embracing legal digital downloads are the way forward.
