How do you compare Bhangra in the UK to Bhangra in North America ?

hey ameet yeh we need more posters on the forum! cos the site is amazing n has everything first but the forum needs some more bhangra heads!!

i think one area north america is realy ahead is bhangra teams uk is starting to get a few but their routines are not good compared to likes of bhangra empire!!

who are the biggest north amreican acts?? i really like En karma..

i definitely agree with you, the forum is a little more dead then what i am originally used to.

i find that North Americans focus more on the dance where the UK is more music focus. I believe that the North Americans are revolutionizing the art of Bhangra but this cannot be done without the music they are getting from the UK. So they both do go hand in hand.

En Karma has been doing themselves well, but an organization called VIBC are really good a finding new acts, this year they are working with a band called 'Black Mahal' - they're from San Francisco, USA; their lead is the legendary Ustad Lal Bhatti, i enjoy their music quite a bit.

i think as for organization in North American the one to watch is Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) - this year they were trying to do a 'World Championship' by having teams from around the world come to Vancouver. They tried for UK teams but we're too successful, but they did find a pretty wicked team from India - they're line up is pretty amazing as well (check it out on the world events tab), I'm pretty excited to see what the placings are going to be on this one

i dont even think UK is tht good with music these days so many rubish attempts at singing n producing from loads of randomers not good.

I think VIBC guys need to get in touch with the SimplyBhangra guys.. the biggest bhangra event teams up with the biggest bhangra website !! make it happen lol

VIBC is actually pretty amazing, they do their best to present Bhangra as an art form rather than just a dance. Theyre opening Heritage Month in Vancouver & they are also helping in creating an art exhibit in Vancouver about the origins of Bhangra and where it all started and what not. its some pretty interesting and wicked stuff.

hahah yeah i definitely agree, they should definitely team up with SimplyBhangra, but the real question is how ! lol

as for the event in May, i think they will have it streaming online! so you can watch & check out, your future competition LOL! but if you miss the event im pretty sure there will be videos on youtube as well, unless they decidee to make a dvd to sell but i dont know about that quite yet lol

VIBC sounds really amazin, u shuld create an official topic on here and maybe keep us all updated on the goings on and when the live stream is up, i no i will miss it if im not reminded about it lol..

Bhangra has evolved remarkably and one would say that the music represents the culture of the Punjab region, and the struggles of its people in their long and storied history.

Incorporating different styles and elements from many different kinds of music while still existing in its traditional form has opened the ideas and doors to new things.

It would be good to see more promotion on what happens outside the UK on sites like this and vice versa. Long Live Bhangra

I think that would be a great idea! Im always keeping up with whats going on in the North American scene anyway I see if I can get started on that thread real soon !!!

I definitely agree with you, Bhangra and music go hand in hand. Now we get to see a whole variety of styles from traditional to modern, which is really refreshing to see.
