"Bachna Ae Haseeno" is the next Yash Raj Films instalment after a bad year of flops including Tashan and Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic. Neither films, starring A-list stars, could create any magic at the box office nor did its music help cinema goers to acquire any interest. Will Vishal-Shekhars compositions give us the melodies we’ve been thirsty for from a Yash Raj Film?

"Ahista Ahista" starts us off with a pulsating electronic beat, balanced off with a soft and beautiful Spanish guitar melody leading us into Shreya Ghosal’s graceful voice. It is a delight to hear Lucky Ali’s voice after a long absence in this easy listening song. However, I don’t believe it’s received as much airplay as some of the songs in the album, which is a shame.

I have been longing to hear the full title track after only hearing a snippet of the familiar trumpet fanfare intro on the radio. Even though "Bachna Ae Haseeno" is a classic in its own right, Vishal-Shekhar have done an amazing job of updating it with a modern and refreshing sound, making you want you get up and dance. This song is on repeat on my Ipod at the moment. It’s a much better attempt, compared to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s Don, of modernising a golden oldie. The chorus has been lifted from the original song sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar and the verses have been sung by Kishore’s youngest son, Sumit Kumar. Vishal’s rapping is a great addition with cute lyrics. This has to be the best song of the album, it’s a shame it’s such a short composition, I want more!

"Jogi Mahi" is a Punjabi number, with a slow Dafli beginning, a great beat and a catchy chorus, however it may take some time to be liked. The original Punjabi lyrics give it a different flair to other Punjabi songs. With its dhol bass and breathers in tempo, it is a very likeable song and a typical Yash Raj song to be played at weddings. Shekhar gets behind the mike this time and does an outstanding performance with the flawless Sukhvinder Singh. New-comer Himani Kapoor is not very noticeable in the song apart from the fact that she sounds a little like Kavita Krishnamurthy. Keep listening to the song, you’ll love it. This one is surely the dark horse of the album.

I fell in love with this song when I first saw it on screen, "Khuda Jaane" is a beautiful melody with a simple yet effective lyrics penned by lyricist Anvita Dutt Guptan. Sunita Rao’s sensual voice lures us into the lead up of the chorus which shows Kay Kay to be at the top of his game in this song. The unforgettable line, ‘…ke ban gaye ho tum mere khuda’ is perfectly placed and makes you immediately think about a loved one. The soft tabla beats in the verses carry off the rest of the song, however I was left craving for a much better ending to the song. This is yet another example of Vishal-Shekhar excelling in composing romantic songs after hits such as ‘My Dil goes Hmmm’ (Salaam Namaste) and ‘Hey Shona’ (Ta Ra Rum Pum).

Rather than remixing Khudha Jaane, Ahista Ahista should have been given the same attention. However " Khuda Jaane Revisted" is not a bad remix, but would probably be suited for car music rather than club music. This mix could have been done better by bollywood remix master DJ Akbar Sami (Jhalak Dhiklaja, Chakna Chakna, Dil Vich).

"Lucky Boy" is yet another Bipasha Basu item number but does not have the same appeal or impact as ‘Beedi’, ‘Namak Ishq’or ‘No Entry’. The beginning of the song sounds promising, until the beat starts and from then on, nothing can save it, not even Sunidhi’s mesmorizing voice. I absolutely love the chorus and think the tune is great, however the rest of the song completely lets it down. Apart from Raja Hassan’s catchy Punjabi line ‘Nain preeto de’, the rest of the male chorus parts are extremely irritating and tacky. There’s also no need for a singing guest appearance by Hard Kaur. She sounded great in ‘Talli’ from Ugly aur Pagli but sounded out of place in this song. This song will most likely be blasting in all the clubs in India and will get all the girls trying to copy Bips moves on the dance floor.

I have to say "Small Town Girl" must be the worst song in the album. I think I was expecting something great when I saw that it was sung by Shankar Mahadevan, but it ended up being another ‘Ticket to Hollywood’ from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. It has strange and quite honestly, boring lyrics, with a typical Punjabi melody. However, I must commend Shankar Mahadevan’s energy, but this song is nothing special and would have improved the album if it wasn’t included in it.

Overall, it’s not a bad album however there are a lot of expectations from Vishal- Shekhar after their success with Om Shanti Om. The music will help get crowds watching the film but will be nothing memorable unfortunately.

Song on repeat: Bachna Ae Haseeno

Songs to listen out for: Khudha Jaane, Jogi Mahi

Songs to miss: Small Town Girl

Bachna Ae Haseeno (Soundtrack) gets a 7/10
