Original, earthy appeal & born to be on stage …. Sona Mohapatra surely fits the conventional image of a star – beautiful, spunky, an ‘X’ factor & the great part is that she also sounds like one!!

Luckily, not all Indian singers lip sync for Bollywood actresses all the time...her first album “Sona” was a runaway hit and this was commendable for a singer who had never sung on a Bollywood film soundtrack till then. Sona’s self titled debut album released on Sony Music and won all the non-film awards in 2007.

Sona Mohapatra has trained in classical music but has made a career fusing Pop, Folk, and Bollywood, Funk and Rock styles into her music & fronts her own band…. Her band of 5 consists of Ethnic strings, Electric guitars, Bass Guitar, Drums/Percussions & Keyboards.

After her smash debut with songs like Bolo Na, Aja Ve, Abhi Nahin Ana, Sufi classic Tere Ishq Nachaya and collaboration with Aussie band INXS on Afterglow, Sona Mohapatra has chosen to release her new album RAAT/DIN in an innovative manner. This release sees her team up with Ram Sampath - Music Composer & Producer, Munna Dhiman-Lyrics yet again.

The first video single of this album,’Diljale’ has been shot in the streets of NEW YORK by Deepti Gupta and represents the night soundscape of her forthcoming album RAAT/ DIN. The songs of night and day which are loosely woven around the timings of Hindustani ragas.

Self assured, epitomizing free spirit and memories ....in her own words: “The visuals of the video embody the transition of night into day and are also symbolic of the beauty and loneliness of the cities we live in.”

A global gypsy, Sona’s music has taken her to international gigs like that at the prestigious Lincoln Centre New York & to stadium gigs like the finale of the 4 Nation Gold Cup in Chandigarh with 40,000 in the stands, on their feet and singing along. Another single from the same album, ‘Paas Aao Na’ has been licensed for the Close Up campaign and has already become very popular across more than 17 countries and in over 13 languages in India itself.

This is a first for any artiste in India.

Sona has also collaborated with pop rock legend David Bowie on his cult hit “Lets Dance”. This is slated to release in an international dance compilation internationally.

Her song, ‘Sapne’ has also been voted amongst the top 5 in the World Song Contest. It’s up there with songs by big international acts like The Verve & Rufus Wainwright ‘

In Bollywood, her first ballad with Sonu Nigam ‘Chayee Madhoshian’ featured in the film “Jumbo” & Daav Laga featured in “Aage Se Right”.
